Turks and Caicos History
On or about AD 750 the first inhabitants arrived on the shores of the Turks and Caicos Islands. During the 19th century, control of the islands changed hands several times. In 1962, the Turks and Caicos Islands became a separate British colony - a status that it retains to this day.
Providenciales
As recently as 1964, Providenciales (often referred to as "Provo") did not have a single wheeled vehicle. The island's first large hotel and casino complex opened in 1990 and touched off a development boom. Provo is now the most developed of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The most exclusive resorts on Providenciales are centered on 12-mile-long Grace Bay, with its brilliant white sand and shimmering turquoise waters. History buffs might enjoy the ruins of Cheshire Hall, a 1790s plantation house constructed by British loyalists. |
